ACHS Music Classes & Ensembles

ACHS Music offers a variety of instrumental classes and ensembles where students develop their musicianship, technique, confidence, creativity, and ability to perform as part of a larger ensemble.

From beginning and developing musicians to advanced performers, students have opportunities to grow throughout their years at American Canyon High School while exploring different musical styles, instruments, and performance experiences.

ACHS non-competitive music classes and ensembles include String Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, and Jazz Band.

🎻 String Orchestra 🎻

Building Strong Musicians Together

String Orchestra brings musicians from multiple grade levels together in an ensemble centered on musical development, collaboration, and performance.

Freshmen and sophomores perform alongside experienced junior and senior musicians, creating a natural environment for peer mentorship and leadership. Younger musicians gain confidence and experience while upperclassmen have opportunities to model strong musicianship and rehearsal habits.

Students develop string technique, ensemble awareness, listening skills, musical expression, and the discipline required to create a unified orchestral sound.

Focus: Strings • Ensemble Skills • Musical Development • Peer Mentorship • Concert Performance

🪈Wind 🎺Ensemble

Advanced Performance. Challenging Repertoire.

Wind Ensemble provides advanced junior and senior wind and percussion musicians with an opportunity to perform sophisticated and technically challenging music.

Students develop greater control, precision, musical expression, independence, and ensemble awareness while performing repertoire ranging from traditional concert literature to contemporary and imaginative works.

The ensemble challenges every performer to contribute not only accurate notes and rhythms, but also balance, tone, expression, interpretation, and musical character.

Focus: Advanced Woodwinds • Brass • Percussion • Technical Mastery • Musical Expression • Advanced Repertoire

🎻Chamber Orchestra🎻

Encouraging Independent Musicianship.

Chamber Orchestra provides experienced junior and senior string musicians with the opportunity to explore more advanced repertoire in a smaller ensemble setting.

Because chamber music places greater responsibility on each individual performer, students learn to listen closely, communicate musically, and respond to one another with increasing independence.

The ensemble challenges students to move beyond simply performing their own part and develop the awareness needed to function together as one musical unit.

Students build confidence, musical maturity, technical skill, and the ability to perform with increasingly limited reliance on a conductor.

Focus: Advanced Strings • Chamber Repertoire • Musical Independence • Ensemble Communication

🎺🪈 Concert Band 🎺🪈

Developing Skills. Building Confidence.

Concert Band brings together wind and percussion musicians from across grade levels in an ensemble designed to strengthen technique, musicianship, confidence, and ensemble performance.

Freshmen and sophomores benefit from performing alongside experienced junior and senior students who demonstrate strong rehearsal habits, musical leadership, and ensemble awareness.

Students perform repertoire selected to build fundamental and intermediate skills while exploring music that can range from delicate and expressive to energetic, dramatic, and majestic.

Every rehearsal helps students understand how their individual sound contributes to the larger ensemble.

Focus: Woodwinds • Brass • Percussion • Technique • Ensemble Development • Concert Performance

🎷🎺🎹 Jazz Band🎷🎺🎹

Big Sound. Individual Voice.

Jazz Band gives ACHS musicians a completely different kind of ensemble experience.

Students explore music from across the jazz and big-band traditions while developing skills in rhythm, style, improvisation, featured solos, musical interpretation, and ensemble performance.

Unlike many traditional concert settings, jazz encourages musicians to develop their own musical voice. Students learn when to blend with the ensemble and when to step forward as individual performers.

The ensemble may also participate in festivals and special performances, giving students opportunities to experience jazz beyond the classroom while sharing ACHS Music with a wider community.

Focus: Jazz • Big Band • Improvisation • Solo Performance • Ensemble Playing • Musical Expression
